The Luxury Board Games

Assouline brings its sense of culture and craft to the games that have gathered people for centuries. At the heart of the collection is the Empire Chess Set, a high end chess set with sculptural, heavyweight aluminium pieces and a queen crowned in a nod to Basquiat, alongside the Pebble Backgammon Set, a high end backgammon set that carries a game played for five thousand years and recognised by ELLE Decor as one of the most elegant of 2025. Around them, the Pebble Domino Set, the Pebble Playing Card Set with its gold-gilded decks, and the Library Tic-Tac-Toe Set turn familiar pastimes into designer board games, made to be seen as much as played.

Crafted to Be Kept

Each piece is worked in the materials that define Assouline's world: rich walnut, pebbled and inlaid leather, brushed brass, and heavyweight aluminium with soft polysuede. The chess set frames an inlaid pebbled leather playing surface within a brushed brass border; the backgammon set pairs an inlaid leather board and leather checkers with brass accents and hand-painted dice; the oversized dominoes are cast in inlaid leather framed in walnut, with recessed walnut pips. These are high end board games finished by hand, conceived as heirloom pieces rather than passing diversions, each detail rewarding a closer look.

How to Style Them at Home

These are games made to remain in view, at home on a table or a shelf between rounds. Set the chess or backgammon board on a low table where a match can rest mid-play, or arrange the pebbled leather cases along a shelf or console as sculptural objects in their own right. In walnut, pebbled leather and brushed brass, they settle naturally into a room, bringing warmth and a little wit to a library, drawing room or study. Equally suited to play or display, they make considered gifts for the host, the collector and the player, and objects of décor to be handed on in turn.
